"Builders Brew"

Builders Brew is the second long-player from electro pop weirdies The Chap in just six months; a mini album of singles, remixes and other layabouts that doesn't quite live up to expectations.Admittedly, for me, those expectations are pretty high. The Chap make charming, inventive, daft and skilfully composed music. Electro funk meets fuzzy guitars, with the toe-tapping tunes complimented with spoken lyrics delivered in the style of a foppish toff (its better than it sounds, honest). It's either that or subtle electronic soundscapes, and even these normally retain an element of playfulness. But, if you're new to The Chap, I'd certainly recommend you start your exploration elsewhere. ‘Proper' albums Mega Breakfast or Ham would be a far better reference points. So what do we have here? Well, there's the seven-inch ‘radio edit' of the marvellous 'Proper Rock', as well as its ‘b' side; a pretty bland reworking of Tina Turner's 'What's Love Got To Do With It?' Then there's remixes of two more tracks from May's Mega Breakfast album, 'Ethnic Instrument' and 'Caution Me'. Both are pretty good, but what will annoy fans is these four tracks make up the two singles released over the past couple of months, and seeing as there's only nine songs on offer here, that's half of Builders Brew they've already got. 'Brace Brace' was the ‘b' side of April's 'Fun and Interesting' single too. Seems pretty shitty to me.The Electroware Remix of 'Auto Where To' is fantastic, but it's just a version of an old track (from Ham), which leaves three: the fun but overlong and naggingly repetitive 'Nice Face'; the short, odd and unsatisfying 'Un Deux Trois Boxen', and the rather throwaway filler 'Young and Joyful Bandit'.This seems to me the sort of CD most bands would give away with the ‘proper' album; a good example was LCD Soundsystem's debut, which had a really nice seven-track bonus CD. It just doesn't seem fair to put this out and expect people to pay for it, even if a couple of the tracks are well worth having. This may seem churlish, as you can pick Builders Brew up for a fiver, but it just doesn't sit well with me. Great band though.
