It's Gonna Be Okay is a reflective full frontal assault from Irish hip-hop export Tebi Rex
"It’s Gonna Be Okay"
The bold amalgam of genres sometimes feels like over-reach. Throughout the eleven tracks (stylized as ‘chapters’), ‘90s boom bap beats collide with squeaky 100 Gecs inspired hyperpop and even occasional does of ear-splitting rock. It can make for an indigestible smorgasbord of sounds, hardly helped by lacklustre instrumentals. The project, however, has undeniable live appeal.
Delving into the character of the record, there are themes of frustration and introspection underneath the façade of carelessness and enthusiasm. None of this is more showcased than in “Chapter 9 - Deadman II”, a blistering, almost confrontational anthem which addresses Irish political problems - austerity and racism, to name a couple. The last track, “Chapter 11 - Happy To Be Here” sees singer Matt O’Baioll pondering “his purpose”. In the age of gimmicks, TikTok and aura of social media, the duo’s reflective attitude to the world surrounding them can seem especially resonant.
The duo’s witty, incisive lyrics lift this album out of the ordinary. Underlying social problems and insecurities are explored in clever rhymes and poetic word-play. “How many shows can I possibly be in / And how many folks are really competing” is the lament of highlight “Chapter 7 - Fear Lasta Lampai”.
Tebi Rex have a strong reputation on the live circuit. Regrettably, their 2020 concert schedule was disrupted, especially as they claim to have the best live hip-hop act in the whole of Ireland. Their UK tour, scheduled for 2022, should see It’s Gonna Be Okay live up to its words.
