"Singles Box Set"
Well, pretty damn completist. The CD version includes 24 discs featuring every single the band put out in their career, from 1992’s “The Drowners” to 2003’s lesser “For The Strangers”, with an overwhelming parade of b-sides and rarities. Back in the day a label would distribute b-sides across different release formats to encourage fans to buy more than one copy of a track, hurling material across the cosmos, but what this does nicely is bundle nearly every b-side into one compendium.
That includes “My Dark Star”, the flip side of 1994’s “Stay Together”, a steady, glamorous indie wave to David Bowie that fits contentedly alongside James’ “She’s A Star” – another often overlooked 90’s band. From the same release, “Living Dead” is also worth a serious look.
The CD2 “Trash” b-side “Another No One” is also a romantic gem; theatrically jagged, it lends well to pouring a bottle of Connemara over the remnants of a lonely weekend, while the CD1 b-side is an equally as desirable cut in the form of oddly relaxed but reminiscent “Europe Is Our Playground”.
“Killing Of A Flash Boy” is another easy mention; the other half of 1994’s “We Are The Pigs”, the band took great pleasure in performing it live for quite some time. Right back to the front of this collection and “The Drowners” 12” addition “My Insatiable One” was probably good enough to have been a single in its own right, such was their capability at the time.
If you’re reading this the chances are you already know the big tracks, but Suede’s apt for crafting complimentary music makes this a perfectly worthwhile investment. There’s 80+ tracks here you might have overlooked or simply not been aware of, and for the most part they’re not too bad at all.
That’s not to say though this is 100% complete, which is a shame. It would seem they’ve gotten so close to an absolutely definitive singles and b-sides collection, but have omitted the notable likes of “We’re So Disco” and “Just A Girl” from the “Attitude” single, and an admittedly small number of other, lower-billed tracks from over the years. There are also plenty of live tracks that have been included on singles which are all omitted from this release, but to be fair – who cares? Generally, this is a surprisingly rich collection of material not even taking into account the singles themselves – “Beautiful Ones”, “Filmstar”, “Animal Nitrate”, “So Young” – all nicely packaged in Nude-style Demon labels which feel about right.
If you ever plan to perform a DJ set of just Suede, you need this, but being honest the constant CD swapping is a bit of a chore in this day and age meaning you’ll probably take advantage of a download option just to have it accessible – unless you spring for the 7” version and can appreciate the pageantry of it all. It will mean sacrificing a heck of a lot of content though, each record featuring just one alternative track, and you won’t get the DVD which includes all of the band’s promo videos - kind of nice to have in case the internet ever breaks.
