stfu_front_cover_image_-_revivals_rituals__union_songs.JPGThe second album from band Southern Tenant Folk Union sees them produce another collection of bluegrass, the music of the Appalachians brought to you via Dublin and London. Using Americana music as their template, it is the kind of sound where a nearby spittoon would come in handy, causing Ned Beatty to look cautiously over his shoulder for fear of another bumming. Formed in 2006, their sound has been honed through live performances, their 2007 debut album receiving praise from both the folk and bluegrass community.Pat McGarvey, the chief songwriter, clearly knows how to bang out a tune, and having such an accomplished band obviously comes in handy. The sound is tight, and whilst the production is overly smooth at times, their abilities are clear for all to see. Opening track 'Never Get The Best Of Me' showcases this, each individual member given the chance to shine in an intricate, shuffling slice of America, leading into more of the same on 'Down To The Riverside'. 'Cocaine' though sees them branching out a little, a jittery ode to the evils of drugs. It’s the kind music you can’t help but love, perhaps though lacking in any vitriolic, individual spirit and relying more on “their sound”. It makes the album a rather one-note affair at times, something better digested in chunks rather than consumed as a whole.Despite this, 'Back To Front' is a joy, a passionate, full-blooded lovesong. “I feel it back to front, and front to back, it wears me out to dream of living”, set against some of the most gorgeous music on the album. Fiddle player Frances Vaux brings a Celtic feel to this wonderful song that is the best of what is on offer, putting the rest in the shade. 'Can You Light A Flame' brings nothing new to the table, whilst 'Her Love’s Gone Cold' also retreads old themes. I urge you to check out 'Back To Front', but can only recommend this album to those with more than a passing interest in bluegrass and American roots music. 58%Links Southern Tenant Folk Union [official site] [myspace]
