"Everybody Wants To Be On TV"

If you’ve been anywhere near the mainstream in the past few years you’ve probably heard Scouting For Girls’ song. It goes by many different names ”“ ‘She’s So Lovely’, ‘Heartbeat’, and ‘Elvis Ain’t Dead’ being just three examples ”“ but nothing much really changes. For their second album Everybody Wants To Be On TV the band have subscribed to the age old adage of “if it ain’t broke...”But it remains to be seen whether it’s something which worked originally. There’s no doubt that happiness sells records and lead singer Roy Stride, who has to sing lines such as “he was a little bit scared, a little apprehensive, he was just a boy from the local comprehensive” on ‘Posh Girls’, seems to emanate happiness from every single pore. There isn’t much to get you down on a Scouting For Girls record; save for the fact that each note you listen to loses you friends. This time round they’ve focused on such diverse topics as the aforementioned ‘Posh Girls’ ”“ they “go like the clappers” apparently ”“ and, erm, normal girls. Pretty much every song deals with some kind of love ”“ be it past love, present love, or the prospect of love in the future. ‘Good Time Girl’, for example, says “she’s keen, she’s mean, who knows where she’s been”. In contrast to their first album this is more PG stuff. Famous is a bit different; after an introduction not dissimilar to ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ they’re singing about wanting to be famous ”“ “like James Dean”.It’s still pretty inoffensive stuff, and certainly not worth getting too worked up over, but the overall effect from Everybody Wants To Be On TV is that you’re listening to the aftermath of giving a bunch of pre-teens a Casio keyboard and a record deal: the lyrics alone could be trotted out by any hormone-ravaged adolescent. It’s not bad as such, just extremely formulaic and predictable. You know where the flourishes are, you know when the chorus is coming, and they don’t even attempt to disappoint. Scouting For Girls may have tried to mix things up a bit since their debut ”“ there’s more synth, which is always a good thing, and several of the melodies verge on dance territory ”“ but there’s nothing here that begs to be listened to. Give it a miss.
