"Future Slip"

Samara Lubelski is an integral part and somewhat of a veteran of the New York art folk scene. Initially starting out as a violinist in her youth she matured into a multi instrumentalist, playing cello, guitar, bass, melotron and many more I'm sure. Collaborating with a plethora of New York artisans throughout her career aswell as having a rich and varied solo career in her own right, she is indeed a very educated and almost indigenous part of modern art folk. Appearing with collectives such as Hall Of Fame, Tower Recordings, MV and EE, White Magic, Sonora Pine, and, lets not forget, Thurston Moore, she also splits her musical time line, and spacial landscape, by working with her Deutsch freunds and lauded experimentalists Metabolismus. Suffice to say she has her proverbial finger in lots of pies.Lovely name isn't it. With that comes a lovely album full of freshly nurtured, cuddled songs. Warmth exudes from the very first note. It is a teddy bears picnic of colours. For those of you who noted the record label, you might also be very much interested to know that Future Slip is produced by none other than Mr Feedback: Thurston Moore, who also contributes guitars, not in Mr Feedback mode though.Opening with Culture King 66 Samaras' breathy vocals, akin to Broadcasts Trish Keenan, have a tender quality making you drift aimlessly into her world. The music, also akin to that of Broadcast, with hints of Stereolab for good measure, is psychedelic with warm textures, subtle flows almost to the point where the album becomes a one track movement. Very much about the mood, the ambient nature of each track hands into the record being a whole piece rather than any one distinguishing feature. Not to say the record isn't distinguished. The Trip is Out is a lovely understated slice of gothic folk ambience, but moreover, the album as a complete is pretty special. As she has a very definite lineage already within her, which is possibly a little Christmas present for me to explore, her cultured folk aesthetic informs this records maturity and very definite direction. With the winter solstice upon us and the (hopefully) snowy times very close by this record is a soothing blanket for the chilly times ahead. Wrap up and delve in.Perfect precious Christmas present.
