Rustie catches us off guard with EVENIFUDONTBELIEVE
"EVENIFUDONTBELIEVE"
It’s safe to say that with the explosion of EDM the musical landscape has changed dramatically in the four years following the release of his debut Glass Swords, but Glaswegian producer Russell Whyte still treads a sonic path that can only be described as maximal in its intentions.
His second album Green Language saw collaborations with vocalists such as D Double E, Danny Brown and Redinho, but this time round the guest spots have been stripped back to the extent that there no mates ready and primed to supply lyrics. Instead, he's keen to drill home that this release is 100% Rustie.
What we receive over these fifteen tracks is a collection of songs that feel spiritually intertwined. From the dolphin laughs that appear on "First Mythz", where trance-heavy, atmospheric melodies and cinematic qualities cascade through the very core of its being, to the hard knuckled fusion of dubstep, bass culture and video game synths that form "Big Catzz", and into the hyperactive rhythm of "What U Mean", each turn feels interlinked, while sadly lacking the juddering drums and bass that that formed the backbone of previous efforts.
Musically there’s much to tie Rustie to his Scottish compatriot Hudson Mohawke, and though they may be working from the same spreadsheet, at the moment Rustie still remains in is shadow.
