"Free Time"
Pinkunoizu are a band as difficult to define as they are to pronounce. Splitting their time between Berlin and Copenhagen, together they make a sound that defies any geographical second-guessing. On debut Free Time they create a series of songs that drift, flirt and snap at the ears.
From moments of gloriously thick Fleet Foxes vocal harmonies to weird Devandra styled creeping lyrics, it’s a lesson in pushing the boundaries of folk and pop. Found sounds scatter and songs break into sampled disaster before carelessly returning to their plotted course.
Formed from the ashes of previous band Le Fiasko it’s clear they’ve spent many years forming and formulating a sound that very much belongs to them. Free Time is a coherent and content debut that certainly has the brevity of an act well versed in each other’s abilities.
Recent single ‘Parabolic Delusions’ is a precise burst of chorus-driven songwriting, all hooked sighs, belching synth and handclaps. “Like an endless loop of American troops /I will come for you, I will come for you” croons Andreas Pallisgaard in his best Banhart. But it’s all over too soon with following track ‘The Abyss’ featuring over six minutes of Krautrock metronomic drums and wailing guitar licks.
Towards the end of the record the focus begins to wander and the enduring psych wig-outs can become a little testing, with the final two tracks clocking in around the nine-minute mark. It’s a bit like a stripped Wooden Shjips – the backbone is there but the meat has been lost to the frivolous pop of the last thirty odd minutes.
Pinkunoizu are at their best when they’re having fun with you, when the sounds diffuse with the joy of a mixture of pop rocks and cola, and the explosions that shoot through headphones can be read from the smiles they create. With Free Time they’ve created a strong debut with a sense of direction, but not quite the ability to reach home, not just yet.
