ohnoono_yes.jpg"Video Killed the Radio Star". Classic, iconic pop ”“ perhaps the best pop record of all time. But what of The Buggles? Who remembers the other singles from The Age of Plastic? "Living in the Plastic Age", "Clean Clean", "Elstree" ”“ never heard of them. Why? Because they were, for want of a better word, crap. But that hasn’t stopped Danish quintet Oh No Ono making some kind of career out of regurgitating that awful early 80's keyboard pop sound that served The Buggles well for, ooh, a good four minutes and thirteen seconds. And don’t get me wrong; I love good early 80s pop ”“ Depeche Mode, Human League, Soft Cell. I’m a sad old new romantic in a big hairy body. But believe me ”“ this is crap. Really crap. They may be having a laugh, and this may appeal to some in a "Scissor Sisters for seven-year-olds" kind of way, but does the world need another manic, quirky Europop group singing falsetto (badly, too), sporting silly hair and costumes and ploughing out pop-by-numbers with a lack of originality that must be heart-breaking to plough out year after year? I don’t think so. And I really, really hope they don’t think they’re clever or eccentric, because they are without a doubt merely wacky in a Krankies kind of way ”“ nothing more.Twice, and only twice, my ears pricked up; first, at the start of "Keeping Warm in Cold", when I thought for a moment things were picking up in an Atom and his Package kind of way (they weren’t) and secondly when "Victim of the Modern Age" starts out by sounding like it could almost be a Cardiacs song (but not for long).I have no problem at all with great pop ”“ even good pop ”“ but this is neither. 25%Links Oh No Ono [myspace]
