N*E*R*D have taken the time to look deeply into the ideals of shallow lovemaking and placed them onto some serious high quality mixing in their new album; Seeing Sounds. The album starts out with pumped up beats and a smooth Pharrell Williams crooning his lyrical sketches for the first six tracks of Funk Rock. The blinking sound is applied in a similar fashion to previous album Fly or Die and has the repetitive skip to boot. Such features are the marking of tracks designed for the fella in the club who fancies dizzying the ladies with his moves while the rest look on and either laugh or gawp.I theoretically side stepped at the edge of the circle for the opening song and didn’t see myself losing the plot in the way only I can. But earlier than expected ‘Everyone Nose’ brought out a reaction pretty unexplainable to anyone that hasn’t head the track. The first single from the album contains lines that make as much sense as George Bush and forces you to start dancing about as smoothly as the President himself; it just isn’t logical. A song with the central lyric being "all the girls standing in the line for the bathroom" (Huh? I hear you say!) gets you bouncing about solely down to the beat behind it.‘Sooner or Later’ gives the slow build up, power finish side of N*E*R*D that flicks my switch. The lyrics look to sum up the harsh reality of having to continuously play the Playboy of the music world, putting up with many beautiful ladies that have no more than their fine features and stand out characteristics. Tough life, eh?The stop and admire track for me is ‘Happy’. It comes in with more guitar and a catchy basic drum beat. The backing chorus from Hugo Chad expanding their full range of sound and musical ability, rather than the sharp technology produced noise of many of the other tracks. This is designed for serious in-car, in-summer aural pleasure and that pure freedom feeling. But having raved to parts of the album, again I return to the shy, foot shuffling type in the corner for much of the rest. The trend that seems to mix two separate tracks into one is still pretty individual compared too much else out there. Consistency of letting motivational beats do the talking do not run through the whole album, but it certainly deserves a fair few listens. 76%Links N*E*R*D [official site] [myspace]
