Lowly build a glorious pop bonfire on their debut EP
"Sink Way Into Me"
Lead track “Fire” could be Abba’s “Super Trouper” remixed by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. Soffie and Nanna open proceedings a capella with the line "It never left me the way it was supposed to do", followed with blockbusting guitar, bass, drums and piano entering the fray. It eventually draws its breath into the refrain of "the fires out…" before building back up to a frenzied outro. It’s so deliriously giddy that even though the words are pure melancholy Lowly sound like they’re literally dancing away the heartbreak.
The vocals on “S.W.I.M.” have the wide-eyed awe Björk brought to The Sugarcubes’ “Birthday”. With the lyric "I’m just another version of you" sounding both love-struck and lovelorn, the instruments glide alongside the singing, all doing their own thing but locking together quite exquisitely.
The second half of the EP is mellower, the circumspect “Intruder” starts with a synth motif and builds into a controlled sound explosion like a Michael Mann film soundtrack. The closing track “Unveil” recreates the atmosphere of a hymn and is simply lovely.
Lowly’s songs meld modernity with timelessness and on Sink Way Into Me they mix anthems, ballads and space-rock with consummate ease. As they’re this good already, their album promises be a treat.
