JONES' debut is a stunning introduction to her endlessly captivating voice
"New Skin"
One listen to “Rainbow”, the opening track from her debut New Skin, and it all becomes clear. It has the ability to flick from intimate whisper one minute, to a voice that soars with empowerment the next. Sharp, striking and comforting, even in amongst the darkness, it rarely fails to impress.
By the time “Rainbow” reaches its outro, complete with Saints & Sinners-era All Saints harmonies, you realise you’re in the presence of something special.
The opening third of New Skin, in fact, is the best introduction to JONES you could ask for. From the opulent sleek drama of previous single “Indulge” to the massive pop chorus of “Out of This World”, by way of the luscious slice of summer soul that is the HONNE-produced “Melt”, it’s a great example of the range JONES is capable of.
It's unfortuante, then, when things start to sag in the middle. Though JONES’ voice never waivers, the production starts to lack excitement. “Wild” feels very Coldplay-lite, while “Walk My Way” is mostly forgettable.
Luckily, the final third shines again, both in its production and vocally. “Bring Me Down” is effortlessly cool, all thumping beats and neon-80s rhythms, while closer “New Skin”, withs its glacial synths and smooth as silk vocals, is almost JONES’ ascendancy to Jessie Ware’s throne.
Regardless of the few missteps, New Skin is the display of a true talent. JONES’ voice is one that is endlessly captivating and, when teamed with the right producers, capable of real dynamite; be it huge pop tunes or quietly intimate ballads.
