"Carve Out the Face of My God"

Infinite Body may indeed be a fitting moniker for Kyle Parker, as his music has an endless and all consuming air about it. However, Carve Out the Face of My God does not convince me that this ‘infinity’ is an entirely good thing. Whilst he balances delicate melodies with electronic drone, I’m not sure if the monotony is a little too excessive to make it successful. Though saying this, he has managed to create an ambient piece that has many tangible influences that make his work different, if nothing else. His original sound is an odd mix of manufactured field noises, orchestral crescendos and ambient drone, in a sort of odd meeting of Max Richter melodies and the Gentle Friendly electronica. His attempt to combine such fundamentally different genres together is not without its merits, and though he may be punching a bit above his weight Parker creates some beautiful sounds on tracks such as ‘A Fool Persists’, and ‘Lived On Its Knees’.‘A Fool Persists’, though repetitive, creates a nice contrast to the rest of the album, and probably impresses me so much as it has the antiquey sound of classical music being played on an old not-so-reliable radio. This track’s ability to manufacture a sound so spot-on shows Parker’s obvious talent, which makes me think perhaps his latest musical endeavour is just a little mislead; the production is flawless, and whilst the songs don’t flow as well as you may expect from a conceptual electronica album, they are clearly very considered. The inclusion of field noises gives the album a Peter Broderick effect, and the church bell synths, seaside noises and crowd noise do infuse a little life into the album, though they do appear rather sporadically to work completely effectively.Perhaps I have met my match in the niche electronica department; I am well aware that sometimes the repetition is all a part of the music, yet I just can’t get into the album. I’ll leave this one to the hardcore fans with patience for monotony that well outweighs mine.
