Frank Turner’s second album Love Ire & Song is an exposed, open-book invitation, suited to anyone with too much on their mind and needing a chat about it. The fact the chat relates around clever, but simple, lyrics makes it an album for all to sink their teeth into. The album is a sung version of many thoughts that trickle through the common Man's mind. For most people reading this they will surely sympathise with the central theme that, at times, "music is my substitute for love ". A welcoming introduction is the opening track ‘I Knew Profrock Before He Got Famous’. It takes you into Turner's World, and makes known to you the people coming and going in his life. Much like the first album, Sleep Is For The Week , it sets the tone for the rest of the 'fresh off his mind/life' lyrics. The difference in this update of his latest diary entries, is that he seems to be taking the crap that life throws at us with a slightly more positive outlook. The results of this being that you relate and then reflect his attitude, removing the aggression that may put off the ears of an easy listener. The music behind the contemplating lyrics is a similar compilation of instruments from his previous work, with a fiddle and a quick strumming acoustic guitar leading most of the way. But the pace stays at a mostly-consistent high tempo. The duo of deep thoughts and a quick beat allows you to listen to the album and hear the characteristics both in music and vocal tone, reflecting his self-confessed influence of the Levellers. The turn of Turner’s mood can be heard most substantially in the track that grabs your attention from the off; 'Photosynthesis'. It marks the change in maturity that comes through most songs, while still giving space for the occasional regression. Lines such as "...and it’s obvious to see that my angry adolescent days are done " are perfectly complimented by "that doesn’t mean I’m settled and sitting out the game ". You might be his best mate by the time the album has spun its distance... Although if you were to receive an invitation to listen to the same problems again, it might depend on how good a friend you are as to whether or not you would take him up on the offer.
