"Feels"
The centerpiece of Feels is “Tell Me,” a single that’s equal parts scuzzy and sweet, with a simple guitar riff that’ll be stuck in your head for days. Here Laena Geronimo does a near-perfect approximation of Bully’s Alicia Bognanno, whose charisma and rawness is tough to match. It’s a love song, sure, but one where “For you it’s true I’d break my brains in two” passes for a sweet nothing.
Geronimo was a member of Mark Ronson-produced alternative band The Like, but while she was just a face in the crowd as the bass player of their faux British Invasion sound, she’s an absolute star as the heart and soul of Feels.
The recipe for their success is straightforward, but they do manage to indulge in some more experimental desires by pushing Geronimo’s voice to the margins of the mix on tracks like the psychedelic “Bird’s Eye.”
For a new outfit, the songwriting chops of Feels are especially noteworthy. “Small Talk,” with its chanting pre-hook and message of romantic frustration could easily be a Taylor Swift radio hit with the right layer of studio gloss applied, but it shines here as a bit of indulgent melodrama on a record that seems not to stand for that sort of thing.
At less than half-an-hour, Feels is a record that’s meant to be taken in its entirety. Personality is an essential part of a quality punk band, and there’s an approachableness to Feels that makes them perfect for both hardcore fans of the genre and people who might ordinarily be turned off by grimy rock.
