I wish we were Pitchfork. I mean, I wish we were Pitchfork back last year or whatever when it could give something an ‘8.6’ and then that band would be immediately elevated to indie rock and roll stardom, I think the last people to do that were The Dodos or Fleet Foxes, which is maybe why I stopped trusting them so much (lol). But I wish we could be Pitchfork because then I could review this - this record by this band Eagle and Talon who I can barely find anything about even on the internet and rocket them to immediate indie rock and roll stardom because it really is that good.
In other news, I’m becoming a total pretentiousness factory bore. Ever since I started doing my philosophical aesthetics class at university I’ve been trying to slot as many references to it in regular conversation as possible, because like: “omgz finally a subject that sort of involves my hobbies kind of” but also maybe on some subconscious level, I really just want to look clever. So anyway, here goes your interest: in my aesthetic tutorial the other day, we were studying this paper by this guy Frank Sibley, and he was all like: “ohhhhh critics can only describe aesthetic qualities blah blah blah” without mentioning context or how interesting (/tangential, egocentric and rambling, hi) their writing is and everything. Which obviously I disagreed with, as I am firmly of the belief, particularly in the case of music writing (but also, really, any sort of criticism) that JUST DESCRIBING A PIECE is not good writing. Later that day I received a package from a Mr Rich Hughes, editor of some non-Pitchfork music website called The Line Of Best Fit, containing an album by this band called Eagle and Talon who I knew absolutely nothing about, and seemingly neither did he (this sounds like I’m making out my editor to be an incompetent- he’s really not [Thanks - Ed]) and so anyway I thought it would be interesting to try and review it without any sort of context or anything. In practice, this didn’t quite work out: I peaked on their website and found some information which I’ll divulge later (you can always look down and see, but I dunno”¦ do you REALLY want to risk spoiling it?). But anyway what I heard when I was listening blind was this: I heard a band, I figured about four people, probs all girls for some reason- it wasn’t just the girl singer, it was the general Sleater-Kinneyery vibe that got me casting the most presumptions around about their gender. Guitar, bass, keyboard, drums? Probs. Coming out of some space in America. What I heard was also really really good. <bit in review where I describe the music really rubbishly not included or probably necessary, just listen to them to find out what they sound like properly if you want to> ”¦only misstep being when they do that “brief silence then bonus track” thing on ‘We Were Figs’ (great title mind) at the end, which is never, *ever* acceptable. EVER.“Eagle and Talon are an indie/art girl band made of wool. Their instrumentation includes guitar, drums, bass + casio. They currently live in LA.” There are two of them and they are called Kim and Alice. This is everything I know about Eagle and Talon. “Made of wool” is an amazing description of two people in a band though. NOW BUY THIS RECORD AND MAKE THEM HUGE.
