With “My Rock n’ Roll”, Dinosaur Pile-Up came crashing into view, in much the same way a mob of brontosaurus might. This was the inspiration for the bands title, taken from a scene in the latest King Kong remake, a film described as both “awful and ridiculous” by guitarist and lead singer Matt Bigland. That it may be, but the scene and subsequent band name perfectly captured the essence of the Leeds trio’s sound. Unwieldy, thumping, a sound stacked as high as....a dinosaur. The suitably titled The Most Powerful E.P In the Universe happily sees them maintain this harmless, lumbering appeal. That isn't to say they possess the smarts of said fictitious sauropod. Far from it.Leading things off, and 'Summer Hit Single' is a smattering soup of melodic hooks. It does exactly what it says on the tin, and this bravado and bluster serves the band particularly well throughout. Following this is a re-recording of the fan favourite 'Opposites Attract', one brought to a different level by the superior production values. It possesses more of those vocally rhythmic winning hook-lines; your reference point here the tail end of the chorus (“I told you this is what happens when the Opposites Attract”). The plodding instrumentation perfectly wraps things up, and for a lot of do-good bands it would be another four of these please. You never get that feeling with this lot though. They appear comfortable enough with what they do to just just roll with whatever comes out of a jam session. The next track, 'Cat Attack!!', has a chorus based solely around these two words; repeated for rhythmic effect. Your average Joe would at least try and work some discernible paragraph up out of however many syllables he or she has per line, but no.That isn’t what’s going on here, and its actually the better for it. It just loosens the tracks up a bit. 'Beach Bug' rounds things off by stitching more grimy, ponderous grunge to elastic vocals, which produces yet more hummable, even whistleable tuneage. All in all, Dinosaur Pile-Up simply appear to have mastered the art of not taking things too seriously. Where this is to be found, so are your memorable tracks.
