Deijuvhs rises from the underground on his genre-clashing mixtape Flower Ghoul
"Flower Ghoul"
His latest mixtape Flower Ghoul is Deijuvhs creating a controlled explosion: one of emotion, energy and idiosyncratic freakishness, refusing to be tied down by any restraints, his is a colourful amalgamation of a broad sonic and emotional spectrum which can leave you wondering what you've witnessed.
On opening cut "Postman Pack", a haunting piano dives in and out of reach as he establishes his status, singing: "You can't walk like me / You can't talk like me". A fairly benign statement, but one that conveys his pride in embodying a different style to most artists, wearing that peculiarity like a badge of honour. "Scumbag Anthem" has a strong chorus, similar to the opening track. On this song, however, Deijuvhs focuses the light on the darker parts of himself. The deep self-awareness he shows on this and several other tracks effectively balances out the tapes’ more fiery elements.
The title track “Flower Ghoul” is a certain high point. A more obvious departure from some of the heavier sounds on the project, featuring dreamy vocals and swirling instrumentals, it’s reminiscent of rapper XXXTentacion - another influence. "Not Machines" is a loud commitment to the culture he is building with Lamesfest, the festival he founded in 2016: "You can't turn me off / Because we are not machines, we're going to rave all night."
Sounds like those of Deijuvhs’ are resonating with an ever-increasing number of people - and for good reason. Even though the music scene can be volatile there is one thing his fans can be certain of - Deijuvhs is going to do things his way.
