Despite unavoidable assumptions, Bluebeard's Room is not an album made by pirates. Or for pirates. It has absolutely nothing to do with pirates, unless there's some hugely subtle or coded reference, or a band member was a pirate in a previous life.Another variable seems to be the band's nationality. At times ( see ‘Johnny Bentham's Dilemma' and ‘I Couldn't Get Off') the vocals have a Dylan drawl and words run together, with a touch of Kings Of Leon lazy articulating, but the accent is as English as a good queue. On album opener ‘Runaway Pram', and ‘I Do Know' the vocals sound distinctly of Gallagher origin. The band are in fact London-based, and apparently part of the anti-folk movement. Personally, I would disagree. Their songs are a little more edgy, filthy and sinister than crucially electric than anything current anti-folk heroes are turning out. Not a completely different world to Noah and the Whale et al, but certainly a different continent. There's an amazing nostalgic feel to this album, a throwback to 50s rock and roll, 60s psychedelic and the swagger and cockiness of the 70s. It also sounds a little like the music you here on the ghost train and fairground rides, that almost melodic-music-gone-wrong sound. Lyrically they're not for those that prefer their words sugar-coated - sexually explicit, in fact generally just explicit, morbid, drugs and the treatment given to women will mean feminists definitely won't be counted amongst their fans.‘I'm on the Booze Mama' sounds like the product of a bad acid trip, careering along at a speed that's just a bit too fast, giving an uneasy, jumpy effect, before building into what an only be described as a ‘freakout' - wailing vocals, an ever-increasing tempo and a sound frenzy before an abrupt end.Bluebeard's Room is creepy, weird, and brilliant. At first listen you may want to turn it off and dismiss it as misogynistic noise that should've died out years ago. But as we've learnt, making assumptions about this band are futile. And by then it'll be too late, you'll already be embroiled in David Cronenberg's Wife's seedy underworld, and you'll find its inhabitants rather endearing, although not anyone you'd want to meet.
