Now I know this guy has a devoted fan base. And to criticize him would mean ensuing a wrath of hatred from snotty nosed boys and romantically challenged girls, but hey, I’m feeling like someone needs telling. I’m afraid that person is Darren Hayman!

I’ve listened to Hefner, and once in a while they were/are good. Hayman, I thought, had a real gift for writing dead pan pop songs. But how many times can you write the same song, over, and over again. I’m sure he’s a lovely guy, who likes poetry, and Moldy Peaches, but you’ve made too many sentimental poetic songs, and it’s a little tiring.

This solo record is no different, except it sacrificed some of the wit (which is why I liked Hefner… a bit) and gone down the sentimentality route. Its cute, he uses Ukeleles on ‘Welcome To Cresswell Towers‘ – woop, and he’s very British, but come on now, lets stop playing and grow up a little bit. I like to feel like a kid when I listen to music, but this gives me nausea.

Maybe I’m being extra harsh on one of Britains unsung songwriting talents but I really think this guy sucks! He does give the Geek a voice though, but so did Billy Corgan – and he fucking Rocked it!
