"Who's Hurting Now?"

Candi Staton is enjoying quite the resurgence at the moment. After a surprise barn-stormer of a set at Glastonbury, and that song from Sex and the City, which sounds bizarrely like a song on the new Animal Collective album, there's definitely still life in this one yet.On some levels, Who's Hurting Now? is nothing more than a glorified Bridget Jones's Diary soundtrack. However, there are more classics in that film that most would care to admit, (although not the Robbie Williams swing covers), and whilst they might be a guilty pleasure, there's more to these women-scorned, ice-cream-eating-wallowing tracks than a screech-a-long chorus.Big production, big band, big voice, and big clichés; it's an album any discerning music fan would write off, and perhaps it's a bit of a guilty pleasure, but one that's definitely worth partaking in. Candi Staton's voice has taken on a more world-weary, experienced sound with this album, like she's passing on her words of wisdom to the younger generation, but at the same time still battling her own demons. Yes, the lyrics are predominantly about men being complete shits, but there's still a level of naivety and (perhaps foolish) optimism that stops Who's Hurting Now? becoming too much of a diatribe. The classic Hammond Organ is employed on regular occasion throughout the album, giving that timeless soul sound, as well as gratuitous use of seventh chords and brushes on drums. It's cheese, yes, but its cheese done properly.
