"Black Diamond"

Mateus Rose, Piri Piri Chicken, Cristiano Ronaldo, The Algarve, even Luis Figo, all great Portuguese exports, but not their finest according to the rhetoric that accompanies this release from Burako Som Simesta.Fabric records have launched BSS on the UK initially through the 12" Yah! and now in the longer fomat with Black Diamond. That this hits the shops in November, may be something of a marketing disaster. There is enough feel good sunshine bouncing through this, that you could easily mistake the dour grey winter for a red hot summers day in Praia da Rocha.BSS cast their net wide in the search for vocal talent and this gives the bouncing beats a world music feel. Interlaced with enough keyboards to keep Casio afloat and choruses that could hook a tickleback, this is feelgood music akin to a Portuguese Basement Jaxx. The melting pot of vocals and languages doesn't always make for the most coherent of albums, which is why a glass of Rose will always outrank it. A worthy effort none the less.
