"The Effective Disconnect"
For the uninitiated, Brian McBride is one half of Stars of the Lid. Of that band, I’d simply say, if you only buy one album a decade of sparse music, expressly suited for staring out of windows, thinking and general introspection, you’d be hard pressed to find much to match it.
So it’s no surprise that The Effective Disconnect is a great album – but I would ask an important question – how much use are you going to get out of these exquisitely serene drones? Does your life have enough stillness to suit what is basically, all but in name, a new Stars of The Lid album?
Because whilst most of us have a place for something, slow, elegant, sparse and above all introspective, this isn’t going to power you through your next workout, prepare you for a big Friday night out or soundtrack your morning commute. How much you listen to it will vary more on your lifestyle that the actual quality of the music.
Unsurprisingly, there are vast similarities to SOTL, which as I’ve said is no bad thing, McBride’s solo work shows some slight differences. His last, 2005’s When Freedom Lost It’s Detail was perhaps more austere and chilly. Here, The Effective Disconnect suggests more of a movie score. Which is fitting as that’s exactly what it is – its precise timbre providing the soundtrack to the documentary The Vanishing of The Bees.
This is strictly an incidental score – there’s isn’t big string sections or even the buzz of an insect. Instead there’s yet more enigmatic, gorgeous understated music. If you know them and like them, simply ask yourself if you need another similar one in your collection. If you’ve already got Amazon open in another window and you’re reaching for your credit card, The Effective Disconnect doesn’t disappoint.
However, if you’re new to them and are looking for something that suits a strenuous afternoon of Sunday papers or coffee drinking, I’d start with Stars Of The Lid’s …And The Refinement Of Their Decline. Once you’ve exhausted the many pathways and slow musical moods displayed there and still want for more, then you should then head here. Take your time though. Relax. Ponder it over. It’s what they’re all about.
