Bodies Of Water – Twist Again
"Twist Again"
Being a Bodies of Water fan feels like a secret society. Meeting those who share the same enthusiasm and passion for the LA based married couple’s God sent talents ignites instant conversation and camaraderie. In turn, it also leaves you wondering, why are they not more popular?
I imagine that ninety percent of the people reading this review will at least have heard of Bodies Of Water. I mean, you’re reading TLOBF. You must have taste. But think about the masses that shot Arcade Fire to US number one, or the amount of critical and popular attention garnered towards the latest Bon Iver release. Twist Again is not a far cry from the style or accomplishment of these records, and yet just like the two albums that preceded it, it tends to fall short of public consciousness.
I mean it’s probably not an argument to be made in a record review. I’m sure there are countless reasons why you won’t be hearing Fearne Cotton et al spin these guys, but there is one area I’d like to expand on, and that is intention. Since debut Eyes Will Pop And Ears Will Blink, Bodies of Water have always felt like a band making music for their own pleasure, regardless of how lovely it would be if they, say, did a UK tour. Instead, there’s a naivety and honesty within their tracks which as well as making them intrinsically beautiful, pulls you further into their world where, “At the end of time, when you’re family’s dead, you will have the one you love instead” (‘Mary, Don’t You Weep’).
Twist Again is thirteen tracks journeying from the delicate and closely feathered to the crescendo driven, near religiously anthemic, and its absence from the covers of glossy music magazines only adds to the feeling that this record is truly special and truly yours.
