Bad Boy Chiller Crew exert pure, unapologetic hedonism on Disrespectful

The first track is the bass-heavy, garage-infused “So Much in Love”, a short and punchy warm-up to dance anthem “Step to My Shoes”. The whole record from start to finish never seems to dip below floor filler level, and although it’s unmistakably reminiscent of the '90s/00s hardcore and garage classics, it’s the Bad Boy Chiller Crew persona that makes the record come into its own. With unapologetic lyrics such as “I hit the dance, but I’ve come to vibe and I come to raise the roof / I shouldn’t drive, man, I’m on the lines, man. I’m on the greyest goose” and “Crazy, I take shots till I’m faded / A list, I ain’t yet but I’m nearly” combined with the boys’ unserious and fun-loving personas conveyed on their ITV reality show, they’ve managed to tap into something that has otherwise been distinctly lacking in the culture of today - carefree existence.

Much of the album has been mastered by Stuart Hawkes (Amy Whinehouse, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Disclosure), while Mark Ralph (Jess Glynne, Years & Years, Rudimental, Craig David) is credited as the mixer. It seems Disrespectful has been constructed to deliver pop success, and it could certainly do that. However, could it also be too much of a good thing? 16 tracks of pure, unashamedly hard party anthems may be great while you're drinking with your mates, but after listening all the way through you start to get a feeling that resembles that of drinking too many Vodka Redbulls. But then again, this is an album about living life to its excesses.

Disrespectful sets out to let the good times roll, a YOLO lifestyle guide, and it implores you to just stop taking life so seriously. It’s refreshing for a group to focus solely on hedonism without watering it down into something more acceptable and entirely soulless, or drenching it in Instagram-friendly fakery. Bad Boy Chiller Crew have taken inspiration from music that was around when times were a bit simpler and having a good time became a whole culture in itself. Maybe we’re due another one of those soon.
