What were you up to at age 18? Finishing school and starting university? Having your first legal drink (in the UK at least)? Â Generally just dossing about and thinking you are the mutt's nuts? Well, for Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg (Avi to his pals) he decided to start a band and try to excite record labels to the extent that they would release his band's self titled debut album. Thankfully, this summer, he succeeded. Sub Pop has indulged him and for that, we now have one of the most highly anticipated releases of the summer. This comes in the shape of Avi Buffalo. So why all the fuss? Well, put simply, what we have here is around 35 minutes of wistful, summery pop tunes that manage to avoid drifting into being too sugary sweet or precocious. As an antidote to any sickly sweetness, the songwriting has something unerringly underhand and overtly cynical about it here that defies the sound of the youthful jangly guitars and positive overtones.Whilst Zahner-Isenberg's hormones take the lead on a couple of tracks - they are almost audible on the likes of the wonderfully titled 'Summer Cum', 'Five Little Sluts' and 'Where's Your Dirty Mind' the song writing on show in the main, is a lot stronger than some of the titles would perhaps initially suggest.Opening with 'Truth Sets In' the upbeat summery tone of the record is set nicely. It's a fairly simple, if slightly slow burning tune, that is really brought alive when the falsetto vocals kick in after about a minute or so intro. From there we are indulged with the blogosphere's favourite 'What's in It For' which is as catchy a tune as possible whilst still being overwhelmingly enjoyable.Yes, it sounds a little like the Shins hanging out with Flaming Lips on acid, but why would that be a bad thing? It's neatly wrapped up in three and a half minutes of audio loveliness. It also features an element of psychedelic (or just plain barmy) lyrics where Avi tells his Juliet her 'lips are like little pieces of bacon'... What a charmer...Aside from the leading single, there are a series of more than enjoyable tracks appearing on a record from a band that is sure to become a festival favourite this year. The rather filthily titled 'Summer Cum' is strangely warm and sweet (not a sentence I'd have foreseen writing), 'Last Time' and 'Can't I Know' are simple and lovely with their sparring vocals that harmonise perfectly over the enchanting melodies and really demand to be listened to in the warm glow of late summer sunshine for best results.Whilst some will be put off by the sheer wave of hype that surrounds this summer's must hear band, not to mention the slight precociousness and hormone infused youthfulness of the tracklisting, others will be captivated by what Avi Buffalo have produced in this solid debut record that belies their years and most definitely warrants a second spin.
