"Flavors of Entanglement"

It's been more than a decade since the likes of 'Hand in My Pocket' and 'Ironic' graced the charts, and close to it since her appearance as God in cult film Dogma cemented her position as a chart icon it was OK to like whatever your allegiances; no mean feat. But you'd be forgiven for wondering what's happened since. She won seven Grammys and six Junos between 1996 and 1999, before she seemed to forget what made her such a success - even the Juno's have dried up, and only Canadians can get those. Or maybe it was deliberate? I mean there's no harm in trying something a bit different, going for a different formula, exploring new genres. But enough's enough, surely?Morissette has the kind of voice that stops traffic; she stars singing, people listen. Go back to the hits and you'll hear her voice belting out a catchy line within 12 seconds of the track starting, soaring over catchy yet subtle melodies that keep you in the zone. Quite simply, it's great pop music with the added extra of having some good lyrics to listen to (her misuse of the word ‘ironic' aside).Flavors of Entanglement is her third album of this decade, and looks destined to be consigned to the dustbin of pop along with the other two, although it will still shift a bunch of units on the back of past glories. The first nine tracks are a mess of styles and ideas, lurching from Evanescence-style pop metal through soft industrial keyboard pop to deathly dull piano ballads; there is no fluidity, no cohesion and her biggest weapon, her voice, is either smothered or manipulated to the point where you simply stop listening to it. Single 'Underneath' is truly horrible - it's like the Cranberries or something.Track 10, 'Tapes', two from the end, finally ticks all the Morissette boxes; her voice is the focus, the music is subtle, picking up in the chorus with some big dramatic sweeps - it's a good tune - and closer Incomplete is pretty decent too, in a quirky way. It's just a shame they're in such poor company and, to be honest, neither would've made the cut for Jagged Little Pill.
