Shipwrecking-EP-coverWell here’s a bit of a rare thing ”“ an EP recorded all in one take. The result is, as you’d expect, a raw and rough around the edges collection of songs, and a snapshot of 85 Bears - a band at the height of enthusiasm and energy. The Shipwrecking EP clocks at just over 25 minutes over three tracks, it’s hard to work out where one ends and the next one starts (well apart from the three second gap, obviously), and the constant looping and repetitive sections makes it all too easy to dip in and out. However, make it through the first track ”“ ‘Shipwrecking in the 21st Century Was Way Better In Black and White’, which starts off well and then seems to get stuck, and things start to pick up a bit with ‘Godspeed Young Sir, Your Time Is Up’. With a muddy, slightly atonal guitar riff, descents into quiet moments of reflection, and then back out again, this is ear-pleasing stuff with enough twists and turns to hold interest. The final part of this trilogy, ‘Jumpin’ with Joe From The Highest Step’ takes it’s sweet old time to get going, but when it does it’s an absolute juggernaut, and well worth persevering with for the sheer intensity of the last two minutes ”“ menacing basslines, cascading drums, and some very angry guitars. For a first EP this certainly shows promise, and 85 Bears definitely deserve a pat on the back for having the confidence to knock this out in one take. Clearly an attempt to capture a raw, live sound, rather than a polished studio sound, it bodes well for live shows. 65%85 Bears on MySpace
