Fast rising Brighton garage rock outfit Demob Happy tell us about their debut album, touring and their London 100 Club show, which Hollie Fernando went behind the scenes for this stunning pictorial account.
“One morning in the early part of 2015 we were all sat around doing something or another, probably putting the finishing touches on our debut album, or croque monsieur’s, when the unholiest of recognitions fell across our gingerly placed palms; there was no more mojo to be conjured in our nether vestibules, for emptied by the ambience of elevator they had been. Yet from parts less travelled, parts unknown, there was a success story in wait. We were four healthy young clown fish and we’d all lost our sons or wives or whatever it is in the deep blue current of ambient chill vibe music.
Our rock had gone and there was only one way to reverse the effect, to find the original creator. To find the vivid wizard himself, the relaxation patient, chill daddy, Mr Easy and Mr. Cool. We had to find Brian Eno. Finding Eno. Thus, we look so happy in these photos because 7 months and 42 days later we had succeeded in capturing Brian Eno. Hooking him into our reverse ambience machine and retracting the ambience from our boogie realms to return to its creator, fresh to repackage and give to the world.
Henceforth, the show in London that night was one of the best we’ve ever done, and perhaps certainly the most rock swag heavy. You see, being a band on the road is mostly a combination of doing nothing, waiting to arrive, staring at your feet, choosing from the library of books you brought, destroying relationships with people back home, ignoring responsibility, scrambling around trying to organise somewhere to sleep at 11pm trying to avoid another freezing wet night in the van. Putting your headphones on and trying to pretend you’re not with the same people, wearing the same clothes for the 3rd straight week. It’s also super awesome and super privileged so stop complaining you fucking dick. <3”
Demob Happy’s debut LP, Dream Soda, is out now via SO Recordings, including the single ‘Junk DNA’.
