Will Butler and Sister Squares unveil the new single, "Arrow of Time"
Will Butler and Sister Squares — Miles Francis, Julie Shore, Jenny Shore and Sara Dobbs — present their new single, "Arrow of Time".
"Arrow of Time" is taken from their forthcoming self-titled album. It follows their previously released single, "Long Grass", with both songs being studio ideas originally aired out in live rooms on the band’s August 2022 tour.
The new single is inspired by A Brief History of Time – Errol Morris’ acclaimed documentary about Stephen Hawking.
“Hawking describes the concept, in paraphrase, as ‘you might see a teacup fall off a table and smash into bits, but you never see the bits come back together. Or if you did, you would instantly be aware that time is running backwards,’” Butler explains. “Lyrically, I feel like I was maybe trying to write a Pixies song about that idea — ‘Here comes your man,’ but instead of something coming, it’s just everything slowly dissolving into heat energy.”
After coming home from the August 2022 tour where "Arrow of Time" was a fan favourite, the band regrouped at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn. “Will and I organically discovered our relationship as a production duo through making this album. We didn’t have to talk too much about things as they happened, because the music just flowed,” says Francis.
“As a producer, working with Jenny, Julie, and Sara is the dream. They connect so innately. In one motion they can conjure a mood, or get at the root of a feeling.” Will Butler + Sister Squares, broadly, is equal parts from Figure 8, group experiments from Butler’s basement, and sessions in Francis’ Synthia Studio.
Will Butler is set to score the upcoming Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson crime thriller, Lips Like Sugar.
