Watch James Heather cover Kate Bush live in session for Best Fit
London-based pianist James Heather performs a solo piano cover of Kate Bush's 2011 track "Among Angels" live in session exclusively for The Line of Best Fit in partnership with Crouch End Studios.
"When I was asked to do a cover version for Best Fit I knew straight away I wanted to do a solo piano version of a vocal tune from something non-classical," Heather says of his song choice. "Part of how my style has developed as an instrumental artist is feeling like I’m singing inside, making sure the human words are coming out too, even though there are no words, just left to the imagination. Kate Bush has always been an important artist to me, one of my earliest memories at around three or four years old is stealing a tape of hers from my Dad and absorbing the music whilst sitting on the lower bunk of my bed with my brother in a tiny house in Highfield, Southampton. There is something about her music which is just like nature to me, somehow not in the same realm of some of the nastier sides that can come out of humans, something more pure. Kate Bush is also a great pianist which sometimes isn’t spoken about, her chord combinations are not always the obvious routes, but somehow they work."
He adds, "I chose to cover "Among Angels", a more recent album track of hers, something a bit less known, but a track that hit me instantly. Passing on is something that truly unites us all, the journey to somewhere else, but often something we avoid talking about. At this session I wanted to do the track in one take, playing it only once, it’s very much improvised, like an echo of the original but with a great reverence to it, I hope."
Heather's second album Invisible Forces arrived in April. Next Wednesday (26 October) he'll play a live show at Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room as part of the venue's Steinway Series.
