Universal put out a pop song featuring Mitski's vocals in 2014 without her knowledge
A Mitski fan account has revealed that Universal once released a pop song - without Mitski's knowledge - in 2014 that she recorded as a session singer.
Last night (13 February) on Twitter, a Mitski fan account revisited a 2014 release that Mitski contributed vocals to, but didn't give permission for it to be released.
The song, titled "Diamonds and Pearls", is credited to Brendan Williams and Patrick Linehan, and appeared on a 2014 Universal compilation titled Girls No Boys 2, which included "indie pop-rock, indie folk and country featuring Austin's best singer-songwriters." The pop song, which features lyrics such as "Stay name dropping / Stay molly popping," was put out without Mitski's knowledge, and she wrote in a comment that she couldn't do anything about it.
Mitski wrote in the comment, which was replying to tweet with a link to the "Diamonds and Pearls" song, "It's not mine, I was a session singer + was told it was a demo for some1, but Universal bought it + put it out w my name + I can't do anything abt it."
back in march 2014, universal released their album "Girls No Boys 2", advertising it as a collection of "girl power" anthems that featured the best musicians in Austin. pic.twitter.com/WwPxiSoXqM

the song can still be found on youtube and spotify, which, funny enough, only 2 men are credited in the making of this song
