Troye Sivan expresses his love for Janet Jackson and discusses his forthcoming album
In an interview with Travis Mills on Apple Music, Troye Sivan discusses his love for Janet Jackson.
Discussing the music video, which Mills says reminds him of Britney Spears' iconic video for "I'm a Slave 4 U", the pair get on the subject of pop icons as Sivan as previously said he is inspired by the likes of Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, and Spears.
In response to being asked who he would love to do a remix of "Rush", Sivan instantly answers with Jackson. “To me, she’s sort of the ultimate. She’s so inspiring to me, endlessly inspiring to me.”
He goes on to recall the time he saw her at the Hollywood Bowl, and how it set him on the path to writing his forthcoming album, Something To Give Each Other. "To me, pop stars of that sort of era, there's so much nostalgia – it's like a character at this point. The idea of an untouchable sex pop star that's global – they travel and play for these massive crowds, there's the choreography and everything, and the videos are so mega – everything about that is sort for nostalgia for me when I was growing up and that's the era where I fell in love with pop music," he explains.
"I think the reason why she is so inspiring to me, is because the music is just untouchable. She is so, so good and is constantly pushing boundaries and trying things. There is some really experimental moments in her catalogue. She's the coolest to me."
Discussing the evolution of production and visuals with this new album cycle, Sivan adds: "I think it's just like reflective of growth as a person. When I started, I was a kid essentially, and I think there's something really sweet about that when I go back and listen to Blue Neighbourhood or something like that, I can hear my young self in it."
"I'm glad that now I'm just so much more relaxed about everything and I'm having so much more fun and I also just feel way more confident – I think maybe because I'm really just happy," he continues. "I don't feel like I need a whole lot, so I'm just doing the stuff that I actually wanna do, and the kinda lifestyle is so much better now than it was... I attribute it to Australia and my family. I don't know what more I could want, really? Nobody can take that away from me, and the rest of this is just a bonus, and fun."
"Rush" is out now. Something To Give Each Other is set for release on 13 October via EMI Music Australia. Pre-orders are available.
