NO CEREMONY/// play London's Electrowerkz
With their black uniforms and understated stage presence, Manchester’s NO CEREMONY/// were certainly easy on the eye. Their soaring electronic pop and artful evening dress was a nice contrast to Electrowerkz’ charmingly grubby warehouse vibe.
Considering they have been on the road relentlessly since the summer, including a slot at SXSW and touring with Alt-J, they showed not a trace of road-weariness, suggesting that theirs is a sound that travels well.
Sticking firmly to a formula of piano hooks, icy vocals and thumping drum machines what they lacked in musical depth they made up for in expanse of sound. There was an easy confidence too, as stand-out singles FEELSOLOW and HURTLOVE were played mid-set, although it was jarring to have the promo video played as a backdrop.
With female-fronted melancholic sounds that are already a favourite on Radio 1, NO CEREMONY/// could well be labelled the “British Purity Ring”, or even “the Delphic it’s OK to like”.
