Naomi Pilgrim and Sekuoia bring another season of Ja Ja Ja to a close
Ja Ja Ja ended their season of showcasing the finest of Nordic talent at North London’s Lexington last night with a couple of typically innovative sets.
Danish electronic experimenter Sekuoia opened the night, in a wave of inventive synth pop. Donned in black hoodies and hats, they danced stoically as reverb-affected vocals rung out over hypnotic beats played by two drummers on a mix of electronic drum pads and acoustic snare. Interspersed with some bright bursts of synth chords, the effect was intense and dreamy.
The soulful, Swedish Naomi Pilgrim headlined, the staged bathed in a blue glow as she came on dressed in a white jumpsuit to contrast from her band who were dressed in black from head to toe. She brought a classic pop edge to some dancier, grimy bass lines. Many of the songs had a 90s throwback feel, at times reminiscent of Massive Attack.
The main disappointment of the evening was a last minute cancellation of Pandreas; the hotly tipped producer was forced to pull out due to thick fog at Oslo airport that meant his plane couldn’t take off. Many of last night’s crowd will be hoping he’ll be amongst the handpicked acts on the line up when Ja Ja Ja Club returns in September.
