Laura Welsh makes an intimate London outing
Laura Welsh has already teamed with some well renowned producers, having worked with Dev Hynes on her new single ‘Cold Front’, and Rhye’s Robin Hannibal on her debut ‘Unravel’. Last night at her single launch in the unassuming setting of Covent Garden’s Africa Centre, she proved that her sultry, soulful pop translates well into the live setting.
The set ranged from anthemic sounding electro-pop, such as opening track ‘God Keeps’, with its driving kick drum and energetic keys, to the more sultry, seductive tones that can be heard on the previous two singles.
Although she has been compared to many credible contemporaries on the current scene, such as Jessie Ware or Solange, many of her songs also had some clear 90’s/00’s pop influences, with an ethereal tone not dissimilar to Portishead; ‘The Hardest Part’ was a classic sounding pop ballad, with classic RnB drums and harmonies that made it vaguely reminiscent of All Saint’s ‘The Beach’.
Welsh seemed confident and relaxed, letting the performance speak for itself standing firmly centre stage, with minimal chatter in between songs. The beautiful ‘Ghost’ was an excellent showcase of her technical abilities, featuring an impressive vocal range, off set with some pleasant Feist-style layered harmonies from her backing band.
With more impressive production credits lined up for the new album, she showed last night that she’s also got some promising song writing talent to match.
