Kelpe live at Hoxton Plaza in London
Just the trick to brighten up an otherwise nondescript Wednesday in October, Kel McKeown – aka Kelpe – stopped by to bombard us with his ghetto house and folksy electronica.
Latest LP Fourth the Golden Eagle got a proper live airing with a digital hailstorm of background visuals and the added umph of live drums. Falling between the cracks of electro, hip-hop and house Kelpe’s sound was heavy yet cerebral, and unlike a few of his contemporaries he never indulged a soundscape at the expense of a tune.
The few tracks from 2009′s Cambio Wechsel were notably bass-heavy in comparison as Kelpe expanded his trademark wobbly electro-bass with woody percussions and synth breakdowns. Not that he was giving anything away from underneath his baseball cap, but there were hints of a more house, even psychedelic orientated direction to come.
