Kanye West brings Skepta, Boy Better Know, Big Sean, Vic Mensa and Raekwon to surprise Koko show
In yet another busy day for the self-described omnipotent and now seemingly omnipresent Kanye West, the rapper/producer/husband/father/lecturer/fashion designer played a surprise show at London's Koko last night (3rd March).
Tickets - priced just shy of £50 - went on sale mere hours before West took to the stage, with all 2,000 selling out in a flash. It was another hush hush, big name coup for the Camden haunt, which only weeks before had hosted a secret performance from Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL. However, it was clear from the queues (which were easily double the size) and the timekeeping (West arrived on stage at 1am, two hours behind schedule) that this was another level of superstar.
UK grime artist and newly favoured collaborator Skepta, who was one of many to share the stage with West when he debuted new song "All Day" at last week's Brit Awards, was again present along with local heroes Boy Better Know. The song, which was made available in studio form earlier in the day, was played twice to close a set which in its earlier stages made much of BBK's involvement, with "That's Not Me" and "German Whip" gaining reactions as raucous as would be displayed for any subsequent Kanye classic.
With West obviously in thrall to his new Grime clique, much of the set saw him acting almost as their hype man. Devoid of the grandiose set design, costumes and rants (West didn’t address the audience once) that characterised his last visit to London as headliner of Finsbury Park's Wireless Festival, the surprises came in the form of covers (an almost humble nod to the greatness of friendly rival Drake's "All Me") and guest spots from Big Sean, Vic Mensa - with whom West debuted new song “U Mad” from his much anticipated Yeezus follow up So Help Me God - and the Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon for a penultimate take on the classic "C.R.E.A.M.". Throughout, UK and US rappers were given equal time in the spotlight.
Though hit-seekers were placated with visceral renditions of "POWER", "Jesus Walks" and "All Of The Lights", it was in the set's darkest moments that West shone most brightly, namely a bilious "So Appalled" and an intimidatingly forceful version of "New Slaves", which saw West, backed by the entire Boy Better Know crew, beating his chest in front of an illustration depicting the crucifixion of Christ.
