GEoRGiA plays biggest London headline show to date at Corsica Studios, with support from Tirzah
It’s rare to read anything about precocious singer, songwriter and producer GEoRGiA that doesn’t contain a mention of her time as drummer for kindred spirit Kate Tempest, but on the evidence of her biggest London headline show to date at Corsica Studios last night (7th Oct), the focus is set to shift solely to her solo work for the foreseeable.
GEoRGiA made reference to Tempest towards the end of a palpably celebratory gig, admitting how much it meant to her to be playing her own music at the same venue for which she’d sat behind the kit for the rapper a few years back. Though she appeared a bundle of nervous energy, she’s unlikely to ever have an easier run of it; this was a crowd dotted with buddies throughout, no more so than her “best mate” Tirzah, whose excellent support set was the first we’d seen her perform without frequent collaborator Mica Levi (aka Micachu) in tow (the last one was pretty amazing, but hey, so was this). A masterclass in understated, forward thinking dance-pop, single of the year contender “Make It Up” and the irresistible ragged groove of closing gambit “I’m Not Dancing” were just two songs we’d have been quite happy to have continued eternally.
GEoRGiA took the stage amid chants of her name from the crowd, quite literally throwing herself in to the mechanical groove of opener “Kombine”. Frantically springing about the stage, at one minute playing frontwoman to her four piece band, the next smashing seven shades of shit out of a drumkit, she hopped about the place just as much as her songs took stylistic shifts, from the set’s peak of the crackling funk of “Nothing Solutions” to the soulful balladry of the closing “Heart Wrecking Animals”.
Having written, performed and produced every note on her self-titled debut album, one got the impression that if GEoRGiA had enough limbs to play every instrument on stage herself tonight, she’d have done just that. Throughout, her boundless talents were exhibited with commendable humility, and we should all be watching intently to see whatever it is she does with them next.
