Flume wraps up his European tour in serious style at XOYO
Having sold out East London’s Birthdays, massive popularity demanded Australian production wonder-kid Flume play his first London show at XOYO – a venue he had equally little trouble selling-out.
At just 21, one might be forgiven for feeling slight pangs of envy watching Harley Streten fly between boxes of buttons with arms aloft, whipping the crowd into a genuine frenzy and barely breaking a sweat in the process. However, this emotion never has time to develop as you become somewhat transfixed by the sheer quality of his music and the skill and polished professionalism in which it is deployed. The genre-defying sound he has established, embracing elements of house, electo and R&B, has resulted in a wonderfully diverse but accessible selection and widespread acknowledgement. What is more, his live set serves to confirm how effective his song-writing is – the majority of the crowd completely in-the-know as one song mixed seamlessly into another.
The performance grew naturally through the melodic, almost lounge-like ‘Ezra’, to the smooth ‘Sleepless’ synth lick, by which time he was really into his stride, playfully fiddling with rhythms and spurring on the hoards. The brilliantly building ‘Insane’ provided immensely deep and satisfying drops, but it’s a track that also highlights the pop possibilites, with the female vocal line bordering on mainstream Euro, before typical squealing alterations ensure his stamp remains. ‘Holding On’, ‘HyperParadise’ and the new ’Left Alone (ft. Chet Faker)‘ were all highlights, alongside especially popular nods to Notorious B.I.G and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’.
A complete performance then from this hugely talented Best Fit ‘One To Watch’; indeed I think the music world is watching closely, and his attire says it all – Flume is totally ‘rad’.
