Sufjan Stevens' Illinois getting musical adaptation this summer
Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois album is being turned into a stage musical which will debut this June
Pitchfork reports that Stevens’ 2005 concept album will become a stage musical as part of the performing arts series at the Bard College Fisher Center in New York, and will run for a few dates across June and July.
The musical will be directed and choreographed by Justin Peck (West Side Story), who wrote the story featuring Stevens’ Illinois songs alongside Jackie Sibblies Drury.
After showing at Bard College, the musical is expected to head to Chicago, but that’s yet to be announced.
Stevens’ latest album was 2021’s joint album with Angelo De Augustine, A Beginner’s Mind.
In July 2022 Sufjan Stevens shared two alternate versions of “Fourth of July”.
