SOPHIE tops Rough Trade's Album of the Year list

20 November 2024, 11:35 | Written by Tyler Damara Kelly

Independent retailers Rough Trade have announced their Top 100 Albums of the Year, topped by SOPHIE’s posthumous self-titled album.

SOPHIE taking the number one spot for her posthumous self-titled album marks the first time a trans woman has topped the poll and is another first for an artist who broke so many boundaries in her lifetime.

“There is an inherently infinite quality to SOPHIE’s music and this posthumous album is testament to the boundless pop possibility that she embodied as an artist," says Emily Waller, Head of Brand and Content, Rough Trade. "Crowning SOPHIE Album of the Year not only celebrates the collaborative and innovative artistic achievement found within it, but rightfully acknowledges the sonic paths yet untravelled that her final work will undoubtedly help set the course for. A poignant epilogue and a gift for generations to come."

To coincide with the release of Rough Trade’s authoritative top 20 list, a selection of the other artists on the list have announced exclusive vinyl variants will be available from Rough Trade stores.

This year they include an exclusive LP from Laura Marling covering a selection of children’s songs from the songwriter Raffi, live releases from Yard Act, Amyl and the Sniffers and IDLES, and new colour variants from everyone from Charli XCX, St Vincent, Ezra Collective and Mercury Prize winners English Teacher. SOPHIE of course is also represented, with an exclusive silver vinyl edition of her self-titled album, and the very first pressing of her remix album, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-insides Non-Stop Remix Album, after originally being released as a limited-edition clutch bag at the 2019 Grammy Awards.
