Snoop Dogg cancels Hollywood Bowl shows in solidarity with writer and actor strikes
The shows were set to be produced by Dr. Dre in celebration of Doggystyle‘s 30th anniversary.
The anniversary shows at Hollywood Bowl were originally scheduled for 27 and 28 June. Last month, Snoop Dogg announced that they would be postponed to October, again, in solidarity of the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that currently have Hollywood at a standstill.
The shows, titled Snoop Dogg & Friends, were announced the same day that the WGA strike began. During the same week Snoop Dogg shared his support for their efforts during a conversation at the Milken Institute Global Conference, where he discussed the similarities between writers and musicians struggling to get paid for their work.
“We need to figure that out the same way the writers are figuring out. The writers are striking because streaming, they can’t get paid... When it’s on the platform, it’s not like in the box office. In the box office, if it does all these numbers, you may get an up – ‘Oh, it did this many, here’s another check.’ But on streaming you got 300,000 hours that somebody watched your movie. Where’s the money?”
Taking to his Instagram yesterday (25 June), Snoop Dogg announced that he will be cancelling the rescheduled shows due to the "uncertainty of when this will be over".
"We continue to stand in solidarity with all of our brothers and sisters in the WGA and SAG/AFTRA during this difficult time and remain hopeful that the AMPTP will come back to the negotiating table with a REAL proposal and we can all get back to work," his statement read.
On 14 July, the American actors union SAG-AFTRA went on strike over an ongoing labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. There is no clear date as to when this strike will end.
