Sky Ferreira opened Kevin Abstract's Coachella set with a cover of Lady A’s “Need You Now”
On Saturday, before Kevin Abstract took to the stage, he invited Sky Ferreira to open his set with a surprise performance of Lady A’s 2009 song “Need You Now”.
The stripped-back, atmospheric synth-pop performance was probably the most unexpected part of this year's first weekend of Coachella. Elsewhere in his set, he performed "Crumble" and "Peach" with Dominic Fike, as well as other songs from his third studio album, Blanket.
Sky Ferreira just wrapped up a run of UK headline shows, which, when they were announced, led fans to believe she was finally releasing the follow-up to her debut album, Night Time, My Time, which came out in 2013. She has not released an album since then, only two standalone singles – “Don’t Forget” in 2022 and “Downhill Lullaby” in 2019.
Last year, fans shared footage of a billboard in Times Square which read "FREE SKY FERREIRA", and confirmed that it is a real billboard which appeared to have been organised by themselves. The billboard was noticed by Sky Ferreira herself, who seemed to confirm that she is in fact being held hostage by her label. Over the weekend, in another protest against Sky Ferreira being locked into a contract with Capitol Records, the campaigners flew a banner over the headquarters of Capitol Records, which read: "Free Sky Ferreira". Since then, she appears to have been removed from their website.
