Sky Ferreira on being dropped from Capitol: "It feels liberating, but I’m honestly still angry about the situation"

In a recent interview with Vogue, Sky Ferreira details the battles with her old label Capitol, to release her long-awaited second album, Masochism.

Following years of fans battling to 'Free Sky Ferreira' from her contract at Capitol Records, she had been removed from their online artist roster back in November. Ferreira released her debut album, Night Time, My Time, in 2013. An Instagram fan account for the American singer-songwriter, which has been active since March 2021, had been campaigning for the Ferreira’s release from her record label as they were holding her back from releasing her second album, Masochism.

They shared footage of a billboard in Times Square which read "FREE SKY FERREIRA", as well as flying a banner over the headquarters of Capitol Records with the same message. Now, in an interview with Vogue, Sky Ferreira has spoken about the experience from her own perspective.

She revealed that Capitol "waited until the ten-year anniversary of Night Time, My Time," and then finally dropped her "via an automated messaged that got forwarded" to her on a weekend, after she had tried and failed to communicate with them for months. Whilst she's unsure of how best to speak about the situation without getting in trouble, she's also not afraid to be honest, "because what else can they do to me at this point?"

In what should've been a time for celebration, Ferreira admits that she was "dreading" the ten-year anniversary of her debut album. "I should be able to celebrate something like that because as long as this album has been around, people still care about it. I’m able to do a song for an A24 film after all this time because that album clearly meant something to people, and I am proud of that. But it shouldn’t have to remind me of another year of being trapped in a mess that I didn’t create. They want me to look responsible by dragging it out and blocking me from releasing music even after already being blocked from so many other opportunities because of them," she said.

Sky Ferreira is now gearing up to release "Leash", which will be her first track since the 2022 single, "Don't Forget". The song is taken from the upcoming Halina Reijn-directed A24 film Babygirl. She's been told to re-record her music – just as Taylor Swift did to regain ownership of her music – but the reality is, she simply cannot afford to do that. "I am following up “Leash” with another song right afterwards — some time early next year — because I don’t want it to seem like some random one-off," she shared. "Because that’s another thing, Capitol would’ve never let me do something like this Babygirl song."

As for Masochism, its release is still up in the air. “It’s just a matter of getting all my stuff back, which is fucking crazy. I don’t even know who to talk to at the label anymore. For all I know, the people at Capital now could be really nice. I feel like they don’t even really know what’s going on, because I think most of the people at Capitol who threw me under the bus are long gone. They got dropped too, which is honestly a bit funny," she said. Speaking about being released from the label, she says: "It feels liberating, but I’m honestly still angry about the situation.”

Babygirl is set for release on 25 December in the US, and on 10 January in the UK.
