Second person dies following Brixton Academy crowd crush
A second person has died after being injured in the Brixton Academy crowd crush last week during Asake's show.
BBC reports that 23-year-old Gabrielle Hutchinson, who was working as a security contractor at the event, died in hospital earlier today (19 December) after being injured during the crowd crush that took place outside Asake's O2 Academy Brixton show last week (15 December).
Hutchinson's death follows 33-year-old Rebecca Ikumelo, who died in hospital over the weekend. Another woman aged 21 remains in hospital in a critical condition.
The Met Police said, "At this time we have established that the three women who were critically injured, including Rebecca Ikumelo and Gabrielle Hutchinson who have tragically died, were all in the foyer of the building."
Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, policing commander for Lambeth and Southwark, stated, "It is devastating news that a second person has lost their life following the events on Thursday. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to Gabrielle’s family at this unimaginably difficult time."
Asake responded to the news of the alleged crowd crush last week, writing, "My heart is with those who were injured last night and caused any form of discomfort." Over the weekend he shared a statement about Ikumelo's passing, and wrote that he is "overwhelmed with grief and could never have imagined anything like this happening."
