Sarah Walk reflects on gender dysphoria with new single, "My Body"
Chicago singer-songwriter Sarah Walk has returned with the brand new single, "My Body".
“The groove and initial production for "My Body" was created during a month-long trip of mine to NYC in 2021. I was staying at my manager’s apartment because I wanted to escape LA and find a different headspace to write this new album and try to uncover what it was I wanted to write about," Walk explains, "I was just beginning to allow myself to talk about the subject matter in this song, but it was still something I was terrified about. I had really only discussed any discomfort in my body with my wife at the time but hadn’t even begun any steps towards considering getting top surgery (which ended up happening about a year later).
"About a year later, I had the pleasure of working on some demos I had put together with Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Courtney Barnett etc) and I was really excited to see how she could help bring the production to life. We worked at her studio in Joshua Tree for a week together and she put the drums down (replacing my programmed ones) and added bass and other analogue synth textures. I credit Stella for allowing me the comfort to bring this song in - especially when we didn’t know each other prior!," they continue, "I see this song as the first meditation on the content yet to come; making this was kind of like turning on the engine before putting the car in drive.”
Walk appears on this year’s soundtrack for The Buccaneers, where she first met and collaborated with Stella Mozgawa. The upcoming Apple Original drama series features a star-studded tracklist that also includes Sharon Van Etten, Miya Folick, Gracie Abrams, AVAWAVES and more.
