Sam Fischer and Gemma Griffiths join season 2 of Yamaha’s WAY UP House
Australian singer-songwriter Sam Fischer and Zimbabwean artist Gemma Griffiths are among the six artists joining the new season of Yamaha's collaborative song writing documentary series WAY UP House New York.
The show sees six emerging musicians come together in a historic New York house filled with studio equipment and instruments for a unique song writing experience – with a mission to write and produce songs over three days. Once the music is created, the artists play the songs live in a performance in Brooklyn.
In each of the three episodes, the multi-instrumentalists and songwriters – also featuring South Korean pop artist KATIE, Stockholm singer Mopiano, London-born drummer Jas Kayse and R&B rockstar Jordan Hawkins - team up in pairs to compose and create a new track from scratch.
Of the experience, Gemma Griffiths said: "Music really is connection. It's an incredibly powerful tool. Without ever having met someone you can make a really big impact."
The up-and-coming musicians are joined in the WAY UP House by Yamaha artist and Grammy- winning jazz bassist, John Patitucci, who mentors and guides the teams as they developed brand new music over the three days. As with last year’s documentary, which shone a light on rising stars such as Olivia Dean, Yamaha's aim with the 2022 series is to raise the global profiles of the musicians.
This group of artists are not only from different continents but also part of different communities within the music industry. To bring them under one roof, get them to collaborate in new ways, and then witness the creative magic happen, felt very genuine and endearing," says Sebastian Krenmayr, Yamaha Music’s Head of Brand in Europe.
All three episodes are available to watch now. The first sees the musicians meet and exchange experiences as they arrive in the WAY UP House in Irvington, New York, for the first time. In the second, the artists record their tracks using state-of-the-art home studio equipment, while the finale sees the three teams of two prepare to play together for the first time, and then make their way to the Water Tower Bar in Brooklyn, for the live performance.
