Priya Ragu unveils her brand new single, "Black Goose"
Priya Ragu unveils her brand new single, "Black Goose", which is taken from her forthcoming debut album, SANTHOSAM.
"Black Goose" follows the singles "Adalam Va!", "Easy" and "Vacation" – the two latter tracks were premiered as Radio 1’s Hottest Records.
"Black Goose" was written in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020. It is ablaze with anger, solidarity and clattering rhythms provided by the dholak and the tabla as Priya Ragu chants: “Officer don’t shoot, I got so much shit to do,” before she implores the world to stand-up to such oppression: “Don’t you bring us down, rise up!”
While "Black Goose" stands out on its own merits, it takes on a greater power within the SANTHOSAM album as it leads straight into "Let Me Breathe (Reprise)", a spiritual call for freedom, emancipation and peace.
“It is 2023 and we are crying and protesting about the same damn thing – we are screaming injustice as the seasons pass by. The people are injected with fear. The media is playing us against each other. The ruthless killing of innocent black people hurts our souls," says Ragu. "As Tamil people who had to flee their home due to genocide, we feel their pain and we stand with them as we keep singing these songs, as we keep dancing together until we celebrate justice and freedom for all of us.”
Priya Ragu has also confirmed she will bring her full live show to a run of EU/UK dates next year, which will include London’s Koko on 26 April.
"Black Goose" is out now. The forthcoming debut album, SANTHOSAM, will arrive on 20 October via Warner Records, and is available to pre-order now.
