Prima Queen discuss the importance of festivals creating competitions for new artists
Prima Queen discuss being at Glastonbury Festival and the importance of giving opportunities to rising artists.
Prima Queen were among the finalists of Glastonbury's Emerging Talent Competition, alongside VLURE, Cordelia Gartside, EVA, FFSYTHO?!, Naomi Kimpenu, N’famady Kouyaté and Ezra Williams (FKA Smoothboi Ezra) – who was forced to miss last year’s live final through illness.
They were lucky enough to nab five slots at Glastonbury Festival 2023, after the bookers and judges were handing out their cards to all finalists. They will be playing two sets tomorrow (23 June) evening – similarly to when they played at Latitude Festival last year.
Kristin McFadden says that they've prepared for their intense Glastonbury weekend by "playing lots of shows", as they were just on tour a few weeks ago, whilst Louise Macphail adds that they've also prepared by packing a lot of clothes. "We were like, 'We need five different outfits!' And then we're in like the baking hot tent and realised it's just too hot to wear any clothes."
Acknowledging the Glastonbury Talent Competition as a huge stepping stone into being booked for the weekend, Macphail notes that it feels like a "mystery when you're a band starting out [and trying to figure out] how you get on a big stage".
McFadden adds that for unsigned bands, and for those who are not sure who is best to email for opportunities, "It's really helpful for upcoming bands who want to have as many people at their show as possible."
After Glastonbury Festival, Prima Queen are heading to 2000Trees, Tramlines, Y Not, Kendal Calling, and Manchester Psych Festival alongside the Music Venue Trust tour.
